A conversation with my Dad (a CPA) last night after New York passed the marriage equality bill:
Me:
Hi, Dad. I called to tell you I'm getting married.
Dad:
You're already married.
Me:
I know, but not legally. New York passed the bill.
Dad:
Really? When?
Me:
Five minutes ago.
Dad:
Well, congratulations.
Me:
Thanks. I'm kind of in shock.
Dad:
How did it go?
Me:
Four Republicans and a few Dems flipped. It was 33-29. Awesome, right?
Dad:
Yes.
(longish pause)
Dad:
I'm not sure what to do...
Me:
What do you mean?
Dad:
About your tax return.
Me:
(laughing)
Right, right. Legal in NY; not recognized by the federal government...
Dad:
I'll have to do some research. I'll sort it out.
Me:
Okay.
Dad:
Maybe I have to do a dummy federal return...
Me:
Whatever, Dad. You'll figure it out.
Dad:
This is all new stuff.
Me:
(smiling)
Yup. All new stuff.
Dad:
(pause)
Does this mean you can get on the same health insurance policy now?
Me:
It means everything now, Dad. It means everything.

That's neat.
I stumbled upon your blog, and this post made me smile. Good job, New York! And congrats :)
Hoorah!
Nothing your dad likes more than something to research--especially something as cool as this.
