I Love Commencement Speech Season

"So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life."

-J.K. Rowling, from her commencement speech at Harvard

“It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique. It’s not easy, but if you accept your misfortune and handle it right, your perceived ideal can become a catalyst for profound reinvention.”

-Conan O’ Brien, from his Dartmouth commencement speech

"Opportunity can be manufactured. Yes, you can wait around for the right set of circumstances to fall into place and then leap into action, but you can also create those sets of circumstances on your own. In so doing, you manufacture your opportunities."

-Biz Stone, from his Babson College commencement speech

Annie - what is it like there with the gay marriage vote coming soon in NY? - Sallie

Hey Sallie,

It's crazy here in NY!

Everyone is waiting with bated breath. Every day for the past week they've told us the vote is coming, or may be coming, or isn't happening -- it's maddening.

I've had the NY Senate livestream up all day, while I work. It was supposed to be tonight, but now it looks like if they do it at all, it will be tomorrow. (But one other report said it could go into Friday.)

Reports say they have the votes they need, but the anti-equal marriage people are pulling out all the stops. NOM is sending in busloads of protesters tomorrow. Everyone is manning phone banks. Twitter is overrun with messages.

Still not sure they'll actually bring the vote to the floor, and the waiting is making me nuts!

Thanks for asking!

By the way, Google Roy McDonald, Rep Senator from Saratoga. He switched and came out in support for equal marriage last week (in a very NY way...).

Take care!
